Senior GIS Developer

The Senior GIS Developer is a talented member of the GIS Application Solutions team. Leveraging the City’s GIS Platform, you will take both independent and collaborative roles in designing, developing, implementing, and maintaining feature-rich and user-centric web-based GIS applications, desktop workflow automations, and other solutions to meet specific client requirements.

You will leverage your technical expertise to collaborate closely with fellow team members, the Team Lead, the GIS Solution Architect, and the GIS Platform Solutions team to deliver innovative solutions that directly support the City of Edmonton’s strategic initiatives and departmental goals.

What will you do?

  • Meet with stakeholders and business analysts to understand their needs, identify data requirements, and define application functionalities
  • Utilize ArcGIS Enterprise, VertiGIS Studio, ArcGIS Pro, and web mapping frameworks to build user-friendly and feature-rich web applications
  • Conduct thorough unit testing to ensure functionality and then collaborate with the GIS Platform Solutions team to ensure seamless integration of applications within the City’s GIS infrastructure and monitor its performance
  • Address bug reports, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement updates and enhancements based on user feedback and evolving requirements
  • Continuously research and learn about emerging advancements in GIS tools, frameworks, and best practices to ensure applications leverage the latest capabilities
  • Apply spatial data analysis techniques to clean, transform, and prepare geospatial data for integration with the applications and other City systems
  • Utilize scripting languages like Python to automate repetitive GIS tasks, streamline workflows, and improve overall efficiency
  • Clearly convey technical concepts and project progress to both technical and non-technical audiences through meetings, reports, and presentations
  • Perform other related duties

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university in Computer Science, Geomatics Engineering, Software Engineering, or related discipline and (4) or more years of relevant experience as a GIS Developer, GIS Architect, GIS System Administrator, or similar technical role with an emphasis on enterprise GIS solutions. Relevant experience where developing or supporting enterprise GIS technology was not the primary function will be considered on a proportionally reduced basis, OR
  • Post-Secondary Diploma from a recognized institution in Computer Science or related discipline and (5) or more years of relevant experience as a GIS Developer, GIS Architect, GIS System Administrator, or similar technical role with an emphasis on enterprise GIS solutions. Relevant experience where developing or supporting enterprise GIS technology was not the primary function will be considered on a proportionally reduced basis

Skills required for success:

  • Proficiency in developing GIS web applications, web services, and workflow automation solutions using GIS development tools and programming languages
  • Comprehensive knowledge of GIS principles, concepts, and technologies, including web-service architecture, spatial data management, analysis, and visualization
  • Understanding of software development methodologies, programming languages (e.g., C#.Net, Python), and web development frameworks (e.g., VertiGIS Studio, ArcGIS API for JavaScript)
  • Knowledge of database management systems (e.g., SQL Server), data modeling, and SQL querying for GIS data storage and retrieval
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues and challenges in GIS application development and deployment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey technical concepts and solutions to non-technical stakeholders, facilitate collaboration, and document project requirements and specifications
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, foster teamwork, and build positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Flexibility and adaptability to navigate changing project requirements, priorities, and technologies in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
  • Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy, reliability, and usability of GIS applications, data, and solutions
  • Effective time management and prioritization skills to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and competing priorities efficiently
  • Natural leadership abilities to inspire and motivate team members, provide guidance and direction, and foster a collaborative and innovative work environment

Conditions of Employment:

  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position. There may be a cost associated with this requirement.

Work Environment:

  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary Range: $51.171 – $65.301 (Hourly) ; $90,150.510 – $115,044.040 (Annually)
