Construction projects using BIM projected to reach £27 billion by 2016 in the UK

The 2013 BIM Report by construction industry marketing consultancy Competitive Advantage presents research on the rate of implementation, the types of BIM objects required and the support expected from manufacturers in the UK. The report is based on feedback, online and via the telephone, from over 100 architects who use BIM and are working in a range of practice sizes. The research was conducted during July 2013.  Competitive Advantage have taken this data and applied it to the Construction Products Association’s forecasts, combined with figures on adoption by architects from the National BIM Report 2013  ( I blogged about it here) to estimate the the value of construction influenced by BIM today through to 2016.

The report finds that at present BIM is used for 3.9% of all construction projects representing £3.8 billion, but by 2016 its penetration is expected to have increased to 50.8% of projects worth £55.1 billion.  In 2016 the total BIM-influenced construction market is estimated to be £27 billion.

An important business driver is the UK Government which has mandated the use of BIM Level 2 on all public projects greater than £5 million in value from 2016 on.
