The US Department of Energy has announced that it will provide up to $30 billion in loan guarantees for renewable energy projects. It will support an additional several billion dollars in loan guarantees for projects for improving the US transmission system. The two new loan guarantee programs are being funded by the ARRA and through 2009 budget appropriations. Applications will be accepted over the next 45 days.
These programs are designed to support the Obama adminstration’s goal of doubling renewable electricity generation over the next three years. The objective is to increase renewable energy generation and to expand the transmission grid to get renewable energy to consumers.
The lending authority includes:
- $8.5 billion from the 2009 budget for renewable energy
- $2 billion provided by the Recovery Act renewable energy and electric power transmission projects
- $500 million for cutting edge biofuel projects funded by the Recovery Act
- $750 million provided by the Recovery Act for large transmission infrastructure projects in the U.S. that use commercial technologies
