Take the Survey: State of Geomatics Education and Workforce Development in Canada

In recent years, several geomatics and geospatial education programs across Canada have closed or are at risk of closing. This comes at a time when the country is preparing for some of its most ambitious infrastructure projects — projects that will require a strong, well-prepared workforce to deliver.

To understand the realities on the ground, we have launched the State of Geomatics Education and Workforce Development Survey. And we want your insights. Whether you’re a student, educator, employer, policymaker, or industry professional, your perspective will help us build a clearer picture of where Canada’s geomatics/geospatial education and workforce stand today, and where we need to go.

The survey takes about 3-4 minutes to complete, and your responses will remain confidential.

The geomatics/geospatial sector is evolving rapidly, with emerging technologies such as AI, UAVs, digital twins, and BIM–GIS integration reshaping the skills we need. At the same time, program closures risk shrinking the talent pipeline just when demand is set to grow.

This survey will help answer key questions:

  • Are Canada’s education systems equipped to prepare the next generation of geomatics/geospatial professionals?
  • Which roles are easiest — and hardest — to fill?
  • What impact are program closures having on Canada’s infrastructure ambitions?
  • Do current programs produce industry-ready graduates, or do they require significant training after entering the workforce
  • Where do we see the biggest skills gaps, and how can we close them?

How the Data Will Be Used

The insights collected will:

  • Inform education and workforce strategy for the geomatics/geospatial sector
  • Identify key priorities for skills development and policy action
  • Guide collaboration between industry, academia, and government
  • Contribute to sector reports shared with stakeholders, policymakers, and the public

Your Voice Matters

By participating, you’ll be helping shape strategies that can strengthen our workforce, keep education programs relevant, and ensure Canada remains competitive in a rapidly changing global market.
