Wrapping Up a Year of Toronto Socials

It’s been a great year for socials in Toronto, and we’re taking the summer off to plan how we can make them even better. In the meantime, join our Toronto Meetup Group to get updates on our future socials, and check out our Fall social dates here. We would like to thank everyone who has participated in our social events, and remind everyone else that newcomers are always welcome!

We caught up with Corey Trott, one of our Toronto Social group leaders, to get his thoughts on the year in socials and the Toronto Geomatics community. Corey is one of the original GoGeomatics Canada group leaders. Through his leadership and hard work, the group has grown and flourished in the heart of Toronto.

What’s your favourite part of being a social group leader?

Corey: Getting to meet people from all walks of life. We have people starting their careers, changing careers, people with jobs, people looking for work, etc. We get a lot of students so you get to learn about new and interesting geomatics trends. We get people who have come from all over the world, and you get to learn about how GIS is being conducted around the globe.

Has anything surprised you about being a social group leader?

Corey: I’m surprised at the huge variation in attendees. I’m surprised at how well regarded we become as group leaders; you literally become a leader/mentor to some of the attendees. I’m surprised by some of the relationships and bonds that have formed.

What was the most memorable moment of the year?

Corey: The most memorable moment of the year was when we had a GoGeomatics group join the karaoke session at the Fox and the Fiddle and show off our vocal chords.

Why are these monthly socials important?

Corey: They are great to bring in like-minded people to socialize and network. They are important for the overall geomatics community to have people get together, share ideas, and get to know one another in the industry. They are also important for people who are looking for a mentor and those who would like to be mentors.

What have you learned from attending monthly socials?

Corey: I’ve learned that the more you put in to networking socials, the more you get out of them. The more you give at the social, whether it’s your time, advice or opinion to others, the more you receive that can help you in your life. It’s a balance. So I’ve learned to share this advice and guide people’s expectations of the socials.

What are you looking forward to the most in the upcoming socials?

Corey: I am looking forward to a great speaker, some great food being provided and socializing with regular and new social attendees.
