Open Geospatial Consortium’s 2022 Kenneth D. Gardels Award Winner, Steve Liang

For his work in sensor technologies for Geospatial and pioneering web standards for publishing spatial data, Steve Liang was awarded Open Geospatial Consortium’s 2022 Kenneth D. Gardels Award.

This prestigious award is presented annually to “an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to advancing OGC’s vision of building the future of location with community and technology for the good of society.”

The presentation of the awards was held during the 125th OGC member meeting on February 23, 2023, in Frascati, Italy. Liang is a Professor and Rogers IoT Research Chair at the University of Calgary and Founder and CTO of SensorUp. He received the award because of his work in sensor technologies in the geospatial context. Liang was noted as being the first to come up with a RESTful API” in the OGC, as well as to promote the OGC to the IoT world.

About the Kenneth D. Gardels Award

The Kenneth D. Gardels Award is a gold medallion presented annually by the Board of Directors of the (OGC) to an individual who has made “exemplary” contributions to OGC’s consensus standards process.

The Gardels Award was conceived to memorialize the spirit of Kenn Gardels, a founding member and a director of OGC, who died of cancer in 1999. He dreamed of making the world a better place through open communication and the use of information technology to improve the quality of human life.

Kenn is remembered and respected for his courage, humility, principles, and accomplishments in ‘“promoting spatial technologies as tools for preserving the environment and serving human needs.”
