Spatial Data Science certification at Mount Royal University

Mount Royal University (MRU) now offers post-bachelor’s certificate for Spatial Data Science.

A professor from MRU’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences underlines the significance of introducing an innovative program that responds to students’ increased interest in spatial analysis and data science across departments. Graduates will be introduced to geospatial tools, data, and applications that are useful for location-based IT solutions. It combines a focus on machine and deep learning together with facets of mathematics, geography, and computer information systems. To improve instruction in the classroom, students will have opportunities for hands-on experience.

Data science skills are in considerable demand in Alberta and throughout the economy, particularly in the healthcare and clean tech sectors. Geospatial firms are looking for database management and programming skills, and data science professions are increasingly requiring proficiency in managing and working with location data’s particular characteristics.

It is a one-year program beginning in the fall of 2025, with 36 seats available. This in-person program will teach in-depth concepts through practical laboratory exercises, field trips, audio-visual presentations, and seminars. The certificate includes 10 courses (30 credits) that can be completed in one year, with five courses completed in both fall and winter semesters.

The qualification also meets the needs of both foreign and local markets by combining data science, specifically programming and online solutions, with AI capabilities like deep learning.

Given a shortage of understanding in geography and location-based analysis among computer scientists and programmers, it is highly important that these types of certifications and programs assist graduates in taking advantage of them.

“The Spatial Data Science Certificate will help to set the students up for success in their career.”
