What is Machine Learning? Machine learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are hot areas of technology commercialization these days. So, what is machine learning? It is the ability of machines (computers) to learn like humans without the need to program them. This learning can be supervised where a teacher directs the learning through training sets of data, it can be completely unsupervised or it can be somewhere in between. Many of popular technology terms have something to do with machine learning. These include data science, big data, data mining, data analytics, statistical learning, pattern recognition and computer vision. In...

Creating a new GIS from scratch is a tough undertaking. It involves a lot of innovation. Ecere, a Canadian company based in Gatineau, Québec has been developing a software platform that has positioned them to do just that. This article is third in a series of three in which we interview Ecere’s Chief Technology Officer, Jérôme St-Louis.     GoGeomatics: What are the characteristics of the GNOSIS SDK, which distinguish it from other geomatics 3D visualization software such as ESRI's ArcGIS Globe? Jérôme St-Louis: The GNOSIS SDK has been developed with optimal performance in mind. This can be achieved by using the...

It is rare to learn of a GIS company in which much R&D is done up front to create the programming language used to build its tools. Ecere, a Canadian company based in Gatineau, Québec, is doing just that. This article is second in a series of three in which we interview Ecere’s Chief Technology Officer, Jérôme St-Louis.   GoGeomatics: Tell us what inspired you to create a programming language. Bjarne Stroustrup had already given the object-oriented functionalities in C language by creating C ++, so what was the motivation for the creation of eC. Jérôme St-Louis: The eC language was designed towards the end of 2004 to meet...

Not many companies undertake the ambitious goal of creating a new geospatial software suite from scratch. Ecere, a Canadian company based in Gatineau, Québec has been developing a software platform that has positioned them to do just that. This article is first in a series of three in which we interview Ecere’s Chief Technology Officer and founder, Jérôme St-Louis.     GoGeomatics: Please describe Ecere’s products and technology to our audience. Jérôme St-Louis: At Ecere, we've built hardware accelerated geospatial visualization software, capable of both three-dimensional and cartographic real-time projection....

You might be an observant professional in a department that uses GIS. Your organization may be large and have many departments for which location is important. If that is the case, there is a strong possibility that those departments will approach you for certain services, e.g. cartography, location analysis, satellite imagery, spatial analysis, data processing, etc. In such a situation, it does not take a long time for you to realize the potential for using the GIS tools you have at your disposal for the rest of the company. Also, with time, you realize that there is a limit to the services you can perform on behalf of end-users in...

You might be a Manager, Consultant, GIS Specialist, Geomatics Engineer, Survey Analyst, Cartographer, Spatial Analyst, GIS Developer or Remote Sensing Analyst. There are some non-technical skills that can make you rise above your peers. Among them is the ability to write well. Geomatics requires its practitioners to convey complex technical concepts to a diverse range of audiences in a lucid manner. Many Geomatics professionals lack this ability, while there are many English majors who have trouble understanding Geomatics concepts. It takes someone with a rare combination of talents to produce outstanding Geomatics...

Looking for oil and gas is big business in Western Canada, and like all important ventures it needs proper planning. A small investment in pre-planning in securing relevant maps, data, software, geomatics services and advice upfront helps avoid costly mistakes down the road. Divestco is a mid-sized exploration geo-services company based in Calgary that has been working in this market for over 15 years. Although the range of services Divestco provides is extensive, its pre-built cartographic products have become an industry standard in the Western Canadian oil and gas industry, especially in the famous Alberta Oil Sands. Player...
