The winners of the Canada’s National Geomatics Awards 2025 have been announced, recognizing leadership, innovation, and community impact across the country’s geomatics and geospatial sector.
Launched to highlight outstanding contributions, the National Geomatics Awards honour achievements in five categories spanning government, private companies, researchers, educators, and thought leaders.
The initial nominations featured a distinguished group of contenders from across Canada for the outstanding work they have done in their respective fields, with winners ultimately chosen through community nominations and public voting — making this a true recognition by peers across the industry.
The 2025 award recipients are:
1. Public Sector Leadership Award
Recognizes public sector organizations and leaders whose geospatial initiatives are advancing national priorities, improving services, and strengthening Canada’s capacity for resilience and innovation.
Winner: Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)
For advancing Canada’s geospatial foundations by enhancing the Canadian Spatial Reference System, modernizing the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) through GeoConnections, and expanding GEO.ca. NRCan has also strengthened wildfire and climate resilience with updated burned area mapping, flood mapping and geospatial tools for emergency response.
2. Private Sector Geospatial Company of the Year Award
Celebrates core geomatics and geospatial companies whose expertise and leadership are directly advancing the industry. These organizations specialize in surveying, mapping, remote sensing, and other geospatial services that form the foundation of Canada’s geomatics sector.
Winner: GeoVerra
One of Canada’s largest geomatics firms, GeoVerra is advancing land surveying, mapping, and geomatics through innovative approaches that support infrastructure development, resource management, and community growth nationwide. Its leadership in modernizing core surveying practices and applying new technologies reflects the company’s impact on strengthening Canada’s geomatics sector.
3. Innovation & Practical Impact Award
Recognizes organizations across diverse sectors that harness geospatial innovation to enhance infrastructure, planning, resilience, and public services.
Winner: WSP
One of the largest engineering and professional services firms in Canada, WSP is applying geospatial innovation across infrastructure, climate, and urban planning. Through digital twins, advanced GIS platforms such as PRIME for Cities, and resilience-focused analytics, WSP is helping communities plan and adapt to future challenges.
4. Community Leadership Award
Recognizes organizations that strengthen Canada’s geomatics community through mentorship, collaboration, and outreach, helping to build a more connected and inclusive sector.
Winner: Applied Geomatics Research Group (AGRG)
The Applied Geomatics Research Group, affiliated with Nova Scotia Community College in Middleton, Nova Scotia, combines education with applied research, including coastal LiDAR projects. The group plays a central role in mentoring new professionals while advancing practical, community-focused applications.
5. Thought Leadership Award
Recognizes individuals whose ideas, research, and advocacy are shaping Canada’s geomatics vision and knowledge.
Winner: Dr. Tracey P. Lauriault
Associate Professor in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University, Dr. Lauriault is a leading scholar in data governance, open data, smart cities, and digital sovereignty. Her research has influenced how data and technology policies are developed for more just, inclusive, and sustainable outcomes.
Sector-Wide Recognition
“These awardees reflect the breadth and strength of Canada’s geomatics community — from government agencies and private firms to researchers and educators,” said Jonathan Murphy, Founder and Managing Director of GoGeomatics Canada. “At a time when Canada is investing in nation-building infrastructure, strengthening resilience, and asserting digital sovereignty, geomatics is central to those ambitions. What makes these awards meaningful is that the community itself put forward the nominees and chose the winners. They are true representatives of the leadership and collaboration needed to build a self-sustaining geospatial ecosystem for Canada’s future.”
The awards will be presented during the GoGeomatics Expo 2025, taking place in Calgary November 3-5.
