Canadian Institute of Geomatics Expands Executive Team with New VP Dr Brent Hall
Ottawa, August 16, 2016 – The Canadian Institute of Geomatics (CIG), the largest and most influential geospatial knowledge network in Canada, announced the addition of Dr. Brent Hall as Executive Vice President. Brent will be working towards boosting student engagement and promotion of the CIG in Canada. 
Dr. G. Brent Hall is currently Director of Education and Research at Esri Canada Limited. He has held this position since January, 2012. Prior to that he was Full Professor and Dean of the National School of Surveying at the University of Otago in New Zealand from September 2007. Before relocating to New Zealand in 2007 he was Full Professor and Associate Dean Computing in the Faculty of Environment at the University of Waterloo, where, following his hire in 1987, he initiated the universities leading program in GIS in 1992 and the Diploma of Excellence in GIS in 2000. Dr. Hall graduated with a PhD in Geography from McMaster University in 1980 and between then and his appointment at Waterloo he worked at the University of Guelph (1980-82), the University of Auckland (New Zealand – 1982-1984 and Wilfrid Laurier University (1985-1987). His earlier degrees were respectively at McMaster (MA-1977) and Otago, New Zealand (BA Hons-1975).
During his appointment at Waterloo his undergraduate and graduate teaching and research work focused on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analysis. He was recipient of a University of Waterloo Distinguished Teacher award in 2004 and was recipient of the Canadian Association of Geographers Outstanding Teacher Award in 2005. He is also an Erskine Fellow at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) in 2004, recipient of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association Horwood Critique Prize (1995), and held the Belle Van Zyland Visiting Chair (in GIS) at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1992.
