Canada’s Geomatics Expo Hosts National Reality Capture & Digital Twins Program

Reality Capture Program

The national Expo is pleased to introduce the Reality Capture Program, a series of cutting-edge talks designed to immerse you in the latest advancements and innovations in reality capture technology. From October 28-30th, leading experts will delve into the transformative power of 3D scanning, photogrammetry, LiDAR, and other groundbreaking techniques that are revolutionizing the way we capture, analyze, and interpret spatial data. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain insights from the forefront of technology and discover how reality capture is shaping the future of geomatics.

The Gaps in between BIM, VDC and Digital Twins

The Gaps in between BIM, VDC and Digital Twins

The three building blocks of digital building delivery are BIM, VDC and Digital Twins.

The key is to understand that having one of these items does not mean you have the other. If your BIM hasn’t been updated to record every condition of the building since it was constructed, it’s not a Digital Twin. And, in fact, Digital Twins can be created without the need for model authoring software like Revit or ArchiCAD. Despite what marketing materials tell you, a Digital Twin isn’t a “bonus” outcome from BIM. It should, in fact, be the driving force behind how you author BIM and what VDC processes you use.

Capturing Alacatraz: A Once in a Career Gathering of Talent and Tech

In December 2023 a unique gathering of technology and talent gathered on Alcatraz to capture the entire island, inside and out, from the ground and from the air to assist the National Park Service understand the risks seal level rise and climate change present to the island. Join me and, perhaps, other members of the extended team as we share the technology, the experience, and the adventure of this unique experience.

Results of Accuracy Testing for Laser Scanners in Concrete Verificaion

Results of Accuracy Testing for Laser Scanners in Concrete Verificaion

This presentation details the results of a field study conducted in July in Santa Cruz, California, where thirteen participants employed terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) to assess concrete tolerance on a construction site. The study aimed to establish the precision of TLS as a test method for verifying concrete tolerance in accordance with ASTM E-691-23. Additionally, it sought to quantify the bias of the TLS method by comparing the results to reference values obtained using a total station, the accepted standard method as per ASTM E177-20. By evaluating the performance of TLS against established standards and reference measurements, this study contributes valuable insights into the potential of TLS as a tool for concrete tolerance verification in the construction industry.

Virtual Assembly Showcase: Enhancing Construction Accuracy and Efficiency in Refinery Expansion

Virtual Assembly Showcase: Enhancing Construction Accuracy and Efficiency in Refinery Expansion

The Virtual Assembly Showcase by ONSITE3D demonstrates the integration of advanced 3D laser scanning and virtual assembly in the construction industry. Contracted for an expansion at a major Oil Sands Refinery, ONSITE3D used 3D scanning and surveying for precise placement and assembly of three large modules. The process ensured minimal disruption and preemptively addressed fitment issues. The project, completed in nine field days and ten days of back-office processing, resulted in 700 scans and a significant ROI, highlighting the efficiency and precision of these advanced techniques in large-scale industrial construction.
