About the Role

We are seeking a motivated GIS Technician to join our team and support a wide range of forestry and non-forestry spatial projects. This role is well-suited to someone early in their GIS career who is looking to build practical experience working with field data, operational mapping, client inventories, and government datasets. The role represents an opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of planning processes and tools while also building up your professional network and skill set working with and learning from a variety of experienced Forest Professionals.

The role would be suitable for candidates with either a Forestry-GIS background or a general GIS background. Forestry-specific responsibilities (such as cutblock design) will be assigned based on experience and qualifications. Opportunities for advancement are available.

Key Responsibilities

The GIS Technician will be responsible for supporting day-to-day GIS operations, including:

  • Processing, cleaning, and mapping GPS data from field crews
  • Working with Engineers to create forestry operational and survey maps
  • Overview mapping for a wide range of clients and projects
  • Downloading, updating, and maintaining government inventory datasets on a regular schedule

Assisting experienced forestry staff with:

  • Cutting Permit (CP), Road Permit (RP) and Forest Operations Map (FOM) submissions
  • Mapping and visualizing LiDAR datasets for various applications
  • Preparing spatial data for in-house analysis projects such as:
  • Visual Impact Assessments (VIA)
  • Allowable Annual Cut (AAC) analysis
  • Landscape Reserve Design (LRD)

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

Diploma or degree in GIS, Geography, Natural Resources, Forestry, or a related field

Working knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Desktop)

Experience working with spatial datasets, GPS data, and basic cartographic principles

Good communication skills and willingness to work with both technical and non-technical audiences

Assets (not required):

Forestry education or experience (e.g., forestry diploma/degree, field experience)

Familiarity with BC forestry practices, tenure systems, and government datasets

Experience with LiDAR data processing or interpretation

Experience supporting cutting permit, road permit, or FOM submissions
