Spatial Digital Twins Research Project Initiated by WGIC

A new study from the global geospatial industry council will assess the current state of affairs related to Spatial Digital Twins.

Amersfoort, The Netherlands, October 15, 2021

The World Geospatial Industry Council (WGIC) has initiated new research to assess the current state of affairs on spatial digital twins. For this study, WGIC will assess the offerings from WGIC Members and the industry at large. It will also assess public agencies’ global initiatives and investments in Spatial Digital Twin development.

The report will present recommendations for authorities, standards development organizations and the geospatial industry on guidelines, best practices, and standards related to spatial digital twins. The report will articulate the value proposition of spatial digital twins in terms of return-on-investment, socio-economic impact, and support of the UN-adopted Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Arnout Desmet – Chair of the WGIC Policy Development and Advocacy Committee said, “Driven by a strong digitalization trend, we see increasing relevance for spatial digital twins. Governments are creating digital twin strategies, and the industry is actively expanding its offerings in this space. Lessons learned from the early implementations of digital twins can help us accelerate their adoption.”

WGIC Executive Director – Barbara Ryan said, ” With active contributions from WGIC Members and partners, we believe this report will demonstrate the value of spatial digital twins globally. We encourage any stakeholder working on spatial digital twins to write to us and contribute to this study.”
