How We Can Use Geospatial Tech for Good

The winners of the most recent EthicalGEO Fellowship have been focusing on how geospatial tech and location data can be used for good, and not just targeted advertisement.

The American Geographical Society sponsored this contest with the goal being to focus on the ethical issues surrounding geospatial tech. The winners of EthicalGEO came up with some creative and amazing solutions on how to use geospatial tech for good.

Some of the solutions were as follows;

  1. “Using geospatial data and mapping to better identify and understand poverty within fishing villages in the Gulf of Mexico”.
  2. “Using geospatial tech to survey land plots and help people obtain legal rights to their land”.
  3. Regaining control of their location data with personal location masking”.

AI: Cheat Sheet

You might thing of AI as a concept pulled from the world of science-fiction robots, but truthfully, AI is nothing like fiction. We may think of it as a fully thinking machine, but in reality computers are taught to do limited tasks such as “image recognition, understand the natural language and writing patterns of humans, make connections between different types of data, identify abnormalities in patterns, strategize, predict, and more”. In other words, AI is simply just pattern recognition.

AI has many software platforms designed to transform businesses. It can be used for recruiting and employment, fraud detection, cybersecurity, data management, customer relations, healthcare, predicting market trends, reducing energy use and marketing.

If your business is wanting to start using AI, make sure you have the proper plan in plane. You will need to;

  1. Determine your AI objective
  2. Identify what needs to happen to get you there
  3. Build a team
  4. Choose an AI platform
  5. Begin implementation

In Chinese children’s film, anger grows over controversial map

Following the release of the animated movie Abominable on November 7th, 2019, Malaysia’s film censors have ordered a scene to be removed. The scene is question shows “China’s nine-dash line in the South China Sea, an official has said, amid growing anger among countries with overlapping claims to the region. The U-shaped line is used on Chinese maps to illustrate its territorial claims over vast expanses of the resource-rich South China Sea, including areas claimed by other countries.”

Although the film was pulled from theaters in Vietnam, Malaysia has agreed to play the film as long as the “controversial map is removed from the film”.

What is openBIM and why is it important?

The purpose of Building information model (BIM) is ensuring that the appropriate information is created in a suitable format to allow for better decision making throughout the design, construction and operation of all assets. It is support with the use of many tools and techniques. OpenBIM however is a “format that allows each and every project member to access the information model without hampering the native design. It is a universal approach to collaborate with design, realize and operate buildings based on open standards like IFC, BCF and others”.

OpenBIM is important for a variety of reasons, such as;

Making IoT More Intelligent with AI

More and more companies are drowning in data and are looking to AI to help manage the devices while gaining better insight on the data collected. This is however much easier said than done. When using IoT there are many aspects to consider such as “connectivity, security, data storage, system integration, device hardware, application development, and even networks and processes which are ever changing in this space”.

IoT is allowing business models to transform by helping them grow from simply just making products and services, to giving their customers the products and services that will give them their desired outcome. The combination of IoT and AI is changing the way business interact with their customers, allowing that overwhelming data to be transformed to usable and valuable data with IoT.
