Lawrence Morley Inducted in the Canadian Science & Engineering Hall of Fame
Dr. Lawrence Morley was recently honoured posthumously for his contributions to the advancement of science and technology in Canada. In a recent ceremony in Ottawa, he was inducted into the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame, by the Canada Science and Technology Museum. Morley is best known for founding the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, but his contributions spanned several fields, including geology. He remained an active member of the remote sensing community right until his passing in 2013, at the age of 93.
As Dr. Bob Ryerson explains in this video tribute to Morley, it was his dedication and enthusiasm that those who worked with him remember most. “He was most proud of the fact that he left behind a whole bunch of people who wanted to be like him,” he says. “We wanted to be patriotic Canadians applying science to real problems, solving important issues for the people of Canada.”
Dr. Morley inspired me to work hard in remote sensing; particularly in Radar imaging. The years spent in that field (applied research and training) were the most exciting and rewarding of my early career. Dr. Morley is a most worthy inductee in the Canadian Science and Engineering Hall of Fame. As Dr. Bob states in his video tribute “… brilliant.”
