Speaker Series: Federal Geospatial Platform at Ottawa February Social
The Ottawa February GoGeomatics Social is taking place Friday, February 27, 6:00PM in the basement of the James Street Pub. This month, we have a great speaker lined up to tell you all about a new geospatial government initiative.
Andrew Moore, Project Manager of the Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP), will be at the social to discuss this new project in open data. This project could be a game-changer for anyone working in the Canadian geospatial sector; come out to the social to learn all about it!
Here’s an overview of Andrew’s talk:
The Federal Geospatial Platform (FGP) project was implemented to be a collaborative, Internet-based environment consisting of authoritative geospatial data, services, and applications that will enable the federal government’s most relevant information to be discovered, analyzed, and visualized to enhance and speed decision-making, foster innovation and ensure better service for Canadians and for the federal family. The FGP is an initiative of the Federal Committee on Geomatics and Earth Observations (FCGEO), a group of 21 federal departments and agencies that are producers and/or consumers of geospatial data, or have an interest in geomatics-related activities, requirements and infrastructure.
The FGP supports the Open Government initiative and supports the evolution of the open data portal. Through collaboration and integration with open.canada.ca, the FGP will help Canadians through enhanced search, visualisation and access to open geospatial data. In addition, federal employees will be able to integrate public and non-public data into their analysis using FGP tools and applications through a collaborative space on the Federal government network. In order to achieve these goals, the project is working hard with their federal partners to implement FGP Release 1 this coming spring.
Andrew Moore started his federal career with Agriculture Canada as a GIS specialist in applied soil research, after studying physical geography at Bishops and McGill Universities. This experience opened the possibility of working with the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) in Natural Resources Canada, where his efforts targeted the development of a geoscience information management infrastructure. Andrew left the GSC in 2003 to take on new responsibilities as the Head of Scientific and Technical Publishing Services in the Earth Sciences Sector. In 2006, Andrew participated in the establishment of a new branch that is now the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO). After a few years working with the GSC, he has returned to CCMEO in the position he currently occupies.
