Opportunity: The Department of Geography and Planning at the University of Saskatchewan is currently seeking a highly motivated graduate student to conduct M.A. or M.Sc. degree research in environmental assessment and resource management.

Project description: The successful candidate will join a team of researchers from the University of Saskatchewan and the University of British Columbia focused on: i) examining the best ways to communicate marine related impacts to northern communities and stakeholders to improve participation in Environmental Assessment; ii) nirbidentifying the information routinely needed to properly assess and understand project impacts related to the marine environment; iii) assessing key baseline information needs related to marine activities, and determining the best options for meeting these needs. This is a collaborative research project developed in consultation with the Nunavut Impact Review Board.

Qualifications: Applicants must be highly motivated to pursue graduate-level research. Strong oral and written communication skills are essential. Applicants must have an interest in northern research and in working with communities, governments and industry. Applicants must be willing to travel to Nunavut to conduct field research in the form of interviews, document analysis, and possibly community visits. A minimum admission average of 80% is required based on the last two years of undergraduate study. Suitable backgrounds include geography, environmental studies or science, northern studies, political studies, resource management or related fields.

Funding: $22,000 CDN per year, plus field / conference travel

Location: University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Starting date: September 5th, 2017
