UBC Unveils New Masters of Geomatics for Environmental Management
The UBC Faculty of Forestry is excited to announce that the official approval of the Master of Geomatics for Environmental Management (MGEM) Program. We are now accepting applications and will welcome our first cohort in August, 2017.
This 9-month course-based master’s program provides a unique blend of geospatial skills and landscape ecology training, offering an interdisciplinary professional degree unlike any other in the world. The curriculum is a mix of theory and hands-on experience, including:
- an intensive landscape ecology course,
- analytical and quantitative courses in GIS, remote sensing and image processing, spatial statistics, data analysis and programming
- a proof-of-concept project demonstrating how spatial analysis could be used to solve an environmental challenge, and
- project management workshops and professional seminars.
Graduates may go on to work in numerous sectors, including industry, government, consulting/private, NGOs or academia. Across all of these sectors, the demand for geospatial skills continues to diversify and expand, and MGEM graduates will be well equipped to tackle pressing environmental issues, whether relating to local resource management concerns or global climate change assessments.
We encourage applicants from a wide range of backgrounds – whether you’re a resource manager seeking new skills, a computer scientist looking for new ways to apply your skills, or a recent graduate of an undergraduate degree program with some quantitative training – our program is designed for those with a passion for environmental management and an interest in emerging landscape ecology theories and geospatial technologies.
